How Much Do You Know About Caffeine?

Written by: Danielle Edberg

Extreme CaffeineAs you most-likely already know, Dr. Oz did a special feature on Teeccino products early in 2012. In a recent episode, Dr. Oz had several participants play a game called “Caffeine Blitz” on the show.

Dr. Oz asks questions about smaller vs. larger quantities of caffeine, addiction, and changes in the brain resulting from caffeine stimulation. He also tells consumers to be wary of decaffeinated coffee, as it can have more caffeine than a cup of green tea.

Play the game and test how much you really know about the health effects of caffeine.

While caffeine can improve your short term cognition,  according to Forbes, new research from Johns Hopkins University addresses some of the negative effects associated with this commonly-consumed drug.

“New research from Johns Hopkins Medical School shows that performance increases due to caffeine intake are the result of caffeine drinkers experiencing a short-term reversal of caffeine withdrawal. By controlling for caffeine use in study participants, John Hopkins researchers found that caffeine-related performance improvement is nonexistent without caffeine withdrawal. In essence, coming off caffeine reduces your cognitive performance and has a negative impact on your mood.”

While this short term “fight or flight” sense of urgency and energy may sound intriguing at first, too much caffeine can also result in irritability and anxiety during withdrawal. Read more about caffeine withdrawal >>

Here are some other products that can be surprisingly high in caffeine:

– Coffee flavored yogurt or ice cream
– Decaf coffee
– Light-colored sodas (ex. Mountain Dew)
– Chocolate
– Weight-loss pills
– Pain relievers
– Energy Water
– Breath fresheners and gum
